WHEN TO GO SKIING IN COURCHEVEL? THE MONTH-BY-MONTH GUIDEBlog From Courchevel with Love

It’s the question everyone asks: what is the best time to go skiing in Courchevel ?

The Courchevel ski season runs from early December to late April. Five months. Radically different conditions depending on the period. Prices that vary by a factor of three depending on the week. Crowds that range from a near-empty village to Europe’s busiest resort.

There is no single “best time” that works for everyone. There is the right time for you, your budget, your skiing level, your expectations. This guide helps you find it.

THE COURCHEVEL SKI SEASON: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Courchevel is open from December to late April. Conditions are not the same from one end of the season to the other: snow, light, temperatures and atmosphere change profoundly month by month.

Three criteria typically determine the best moment for each traveller:

  • Skiing conditions : fresh snow, snowpack, visibility;
  • Budget : accommodation, lift passes, restaurants;
  • And crowd levels : lift queues, atmosphere, energy.

The perfect season is the one where all three align for you.

DECEMBER TO APRIL: THE MONTH-BY-MONTH BREAKDOWN

Here is a month-my-month breakdown.

December in Courchevel

The season opener: the thrill of first descents.

December means fresh powder and snow-covered firs. The resort wakes up, the slopes reopen, and everyone rediscovers their ski legs with undiminished pleasure. Christmas atmosphere in Courchevel is something special: the illuminated village, the snow-laden forest, evenings by the fire.

The reality is slightly more nuanced. Early in the month, natural snowfall is not always guaranteed on the lower slopes. Snow cannons fill the gaps, but some lower runs can feel shallow before the first major falls. Once the snow arrives, the season switches on in a single moment.

The Christmas and New Year period (24 December to 2 January) is the season’s price peak. Accommodation commands its highest rates, restaurants are booked weeks in advance and the resort runs at full capacity. If the festive mountain experience is your priority, we recommend booking several months ahead.

Best for: families who love the Christmas atmosphere in the mountains. Less suited to tight budgets.

January in Courchevel

The insiders’ secret.

January is probably the most underrated month of the season. The holidays are over, the resort empties out, prices come back down. And all the while, snowfall reaches its best levels of the year: January snowfall is often the most generous, powder days the most frequent, conditions the most pristine.

Lift queues are short. Slopes are less cut up. Restaurants have tables. Quality accommodation lets at rates that look very different from February.

The one trade-off: temperatures. January can be cold… very cold at altitude. For skiers who handle the cold well, it is the ideal month. For families with very young children or those who feel the cold easily, proper technical gear is essential.

Best for: experienced skiers looking for fresh snow and low prices. Excellent for couples without school holiday constraints.

February

Peak season in all its glory.

February is school holiday month. French zones A, B and C follow one another across four weeks. French, British, Belgian and Swiss visitors arrive in waves. Courchevel runs at full capacity. The atmosphere is at its height: animated slopes, full restaurants, lively evenings.

Ski conditions are generally excellent. Snowpack is reliable, slopes are well-groomed, and the full 3 Valleys domain is in operation. This is the season at its most complete.

The trade-off is clear: it is the most expensive and most crowded month. Lift queues build at peak hours. Quality accommodation sells out within hours of reservations opening. If you are going in February, book six to eight months ahead. No exceptions.

Best for: families tied to school holidays. Less suited to tight budgets or those who avoid crowds.

March

The month that regulars come back for.

March is consistently cited by returning visitors as the best month of the season. The sun is stronger, days are longer, and temperatures at the base of the slopes become genuinely pleasant. Snow at altitude is still excellent…. often more stable and easier to ski than in January. And the February school holiday rush is over.

The result: well-covered slopes, great light, sunshine, fewer people and prices that have come down. For families with children, beginners who need visibility and mild temperatures, and anyone with the flexibility to choose their dates, March is the obvious choice.

Watch out for French school holiday zone C, which sometimes falls in March. The second half of the month is generally calmer than the first. If you are choosing between late February and early March, go early March: cheaper, quieter, same snow.

Best for: almost everyone. The most versatile month of the season.

April

End of season, for the adventurous.

April is skiing done differently. Lower slopes close progressively through the month. At altitude, snow is excellent in the morning and heavy and wet by afternoon. The domain gradually contracts: not all 3 Valleys sectors remain accessible by late April.

For those who accept these constraints, April offers something specific: very low prices, near-empty slopes and an end-of-season atmosphere with its own devoted following. Locals come back out, passionate skiers enjoy the final days, and terraces fill up in the spring sunshine.

The April rule: ski early, while the snow is still firm, and put the skis away around 2pm. The rest of the day belongs to the terrace with a view of the Alps. A way of experiencing the mountains that its regulars would not trade.

Best for: experienced skiers with flexible dates and a tight budget. Less suited to families with young children or beginners.

LA TANIA: COURCHEVEL’S BEST-KEPT SECRET

One thing is certain: whatever month you choose, La Tania in Courchevel offers the full 3 Valleys ski area — with the advantage of a preserved village, ski-in/ski-out access and an atmosphere that holds throughout the stay. And very often, at a significantly more accessible price. Even in peak season, La Tania stays calmer than the larger neighbouring resorts. That advantage makes itself felt at every time of year.

MORE QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO GO SKIING IN COURCHEVEL?

March is often cited as the most versatile period: reliable snowpack at altitude, sunshine, pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds than February. January is ideal for fresh snow and low prices. February is essential for families tied to school holidays, but requires booking very far in advance.

WHEN DOES THE SKI SEASON OPEN AND CLOSE IN COURCHEVEL AND LA TANIA?

The Courchevel and La Tania ski season generally opens in early December and closes in late April, depending on snow conditions.

IS IT WORTH GOING TO COURCHEVEL IN FEBRUARY DESPITE THE CROWDS?

Not necessarily worth avoiding. February offers excellent ski conditions and a lively atmosphere. The constraint is mainly budgetary and logistical: prices are at their seasonal peak and quality accommodation sells out fast. If you are going in February, book six to eight months in advance.

CAN YOU STILL SKI IN COURCHEVEL AND LA TANIA IN APRIL?

Yes, generally through to late April. High-altitude slopes remain well-covered, even as lower-mountain sectors close progressively. April offers very attractive prices and uncrowded slopes, with quality morning skiing before the snow softens in the afternoon.

JANUARY OR MARCH: WHICH IS BETTER FOR SKIING IN LA TANIA?

January means powder and quiet: few people, low prices, fresh snow…but cold temperatures. March brings sunshine, reliable snow at altitude, mild temperatures and still-reasonable prices. For a first visit or a family trip, March is usually more comfortable. For an experienced skier chasing the best conditions and lowest prices, January is the obvious choice.
